Cho Sung Joon From Korea

Drawing in metal, The Korean tradition of Jogeum

The course focuses on Jogeum or sometimes called Joi-jil, a traditional Korean engraving-fabrication technique.

Jogeum is a process where a variety of chisels and a hammer are used to make a series of marks on sheet metal to create an image or a drawing.

CHO Sung Joon will introduce and demonstrate this technique along with other traditional Korean skills including the inlay (Ipsa) technique, as well as demonstrating distinctive techniques (using the hand-piece machine) that he has mastered in his practice.
Participants will learn how to make the specialist chisels for jogeum and produce a series of samples, learning how to use these skills in their own work.

The program also includes talks on Korean metal-craft and how traditional techniques are used in contemporary work.

Red to Wear:Wrap up and announcement

Red-to-Wear-Hero-portrait-cropped

Dear Artists,
We would like to thank you all for taking part in the RED TO WEAR exhibition. For those of you who were able to visit the gallery we loved putting a face to the work and catching up with lots of old friends. For those of you who live in distant parts we would be delighted to see you in Sydney (and I’m sure that between Stanley Street Gallery and the very generous network of contemporary jewellers here in Sydney we would be able to offer you some accommodation).

In the initial brief for RED TO WEAR we expressed our interest in offering a solo exhibition. We have selected Christel van der Laan from Western Australia – congratulations. Christel’s work At Any Price and Dead Weight created a lot of interest and generated some very interesting conversations among the viewing public. We certainly look forward to seeing more of her work.

As you are probably already aware, the RED TO WEAR exhibition was for us, the first of many such exhibitions. We are very keen to host and curate exhibitions of contemporary jewellery. We would like to briefly explain how you could be involved:

Exhibitions like Red to Wear, that take up the whole of our gallery space can be discussed/proposed, however, there is also a section of the gallery we call The Tank which is available for solo, small group or themed shows, (if you have a look on line at some of the gallery images you will see The Tank). We call these exhibitions Tank Shows and would encourage artists to submit proposals for their work to be seen in this space.

We look forward to discussing this information in detail with you. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions or to make contact. We are a friendly pair and as practicing artists have a good understanding of what it is like to approach galleries.

Warm regards
Merilyn and Liza

Immortal Breath

Melody Smith Gallery + Projects presents ‘Immortal Breath’ an exhibition of new work by artist Tineke Van der Eecken. Using the process of plastination, Van der Eecken prepares the lungs for a technique called ‘corrosion casting’ during a residency at SymbioticA. The beauty and fragility of the lungs is perfectly preserved and then replicated in silver and adorned with semi-precious gems in intricately detailed silver bracelets, earrings, rings and pendants. Immortal Breath will also feature a suite of heavily atmospheric and beautiful photographic works, which serve to illuminate the entirety of the artistic process, including the research and development phase of the project. Immortal Breath offers a poignant and thoughtful perspective on themes of mortality and beauty.

The exhibition opens Friday 9 August 6pm – guest speaker Oron Catts, Director of SymbioticA.
